Scientists Discover Link Between Night Vision and AMD

Researchers find that night vision may be a precursor to age-related macular degeneration and can help doctors identify future macular degeneration patients.
The five year study examined night vision patients and found that the biological factors behind night vision and age-related macular degeneration are typically related, thus linking the two eye diseases.
The study noted that people with the worst night vision also experienced a dramatic decrease in visual acuity and development of choroidal neovascularization and geographic atrophy, says Gui-shuang Ying, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, in the November Opthalmology issue.

A new study published in the October issue of Archives of Ophthalmology has found that older people with low levels of certain antioxidants present in many fruits and vegetables, and who are exposed to short-wavelength blue light from the sun, are more likely to develop certain types of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Scientists from the United States and China have identified the first gene therapy directly associated with the onset of “dry” macular degeneration, one of the two forms of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The findings, published in the August 28 online edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, based upon work with human and mice cells, centers on a specific immune system protein called TLR3. Although helpful in fending off illness when confronted with certain viral infections, this molecule, when routinely activated, was also found to raise the risk for “dry” macular degeneration by attacking infected retinal cells.

Until now, research from the National Eye Institute and others has shown benefit to taking macular degeneration supplements after you’ve developed dry macular degeneration, but before you develop wet macular degeneration. In fact, one of the most frequent questions that we are asked is whether taking VisiVite macular degeneration vitamins is beneficial in the prevention of macular degeneration.
Our official response has been that studying whether people develop macular degeneration over several years has not been studied. So our unofficial response was to suggest, but not recommend VisiVite
