Why is nutrition important when exercising?

If you exercise regularly or are involved in a job that required manual labor, remember to supplement your body with the nutrients it needs. Exercise increases the body’s demands for nutrients, ions and oxygen so it is up to you to ensure that your body gets all that it needs. If your aim is to build up muscles, you will need to increase your protein intake.

Proteins are made of small molecules called amino acids which are essentials for building muscle and tissues. The food you take should also contain carbohydrates because carbohydrates act as fuel for the body. They provide your body with energy. During a work out, your body’s requirements of micronutrients like Vitamin B and chromium also increases.

Exercise results in the generation of a lot of free radicals. It is essential to flush these out of the system so make sure you drink plenty of water. The energy production process that occurs during exercise generates a lot of heat. The heat and loss of fluids can cause potentially life threatening situations like heat stroke, hypovolemic shock, renal stone formation etc. Therefore it is essential to drink plenty of water. Water makes up for the loss of fluids during exercise and also helps to cool the body.

Combat the free radicals in your system using antioxidants like as vitamins C and E. Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants. Your diet should also be rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium etc. These are essential for bone health and are found in foods like milk, diary products, eggs etc. When you exercise you must have noticed that your heart beats faster than usual. Since the heart muscles are working overtime, it is necessary to supply them with plenty of vitamins like B and C. The cells in our body use sodium-potassium pumps to keep them working. There is a delicate balance between the sodium and potassium ion contents in the cell and its environment.

Physical activity results in increases efflux and influx of these ions. Therefore our nutritional intake must be such that it makes up for the depletion of these ions. An imbalance in these ions can interrupt the functioning of the heart, brain and other vital organs. Another important point to be remembered is never exercise on a full stomach. The digestive process occurring in your stomach will cause an increase in blood flow to the stomach and decrease blood flow to the heart, thereby causing angina.

Eat at least a couple of hours before you exercise so that there is not much food in your stomach when you work out. After exercising, rest for sometime and let your body cool off before you eat. Never ever starve yourself in an attempt to lose weight or look fit. Strong bones and muscles are a must not only for athletes and body builders but also for the common man. This can be maintained only by good nutrition so make sue your diet meets the nutritional demands of your body.

    Nutrition is only part of the equation. I think getting the right type of exercise is more important.

    Oh and good point about ‘not eating before exercising’ I tried that before and had cramps every two minutes
