What kind of work requires drug testing kits?

It’ll be no surprise to anyone that drug testing kits aren’t something you’ll find on a day to day basis in most lines of work. Your average shop clerk or postal worker isn’t likely to have an extensive array of drug detection equipment on hand - and is hardly likely to ever need one.

For some jobs though a drug testing kit is just another tool of the trade:

Military police and medical staff

Discipline is a huge part of serving in the armed forces and unsurprisingly, those in authority are dedicated to identifying who doesn’t have what it takes. Soldiers can be given drug tests at any time or place for any reason, unlike civilian employees. Given that these men and women will be responsible for lethal weaponry and for keeping each other alive in a combat situation, guaranteeing a clear mind and a clean body is critical.

Prison wardens and medical staff

Unsurprisingly, one of the biggest challenges facing those working in the prison system is trying to control drug use among prisoners. Identifying who’s using the drugs can be a key step in working out the source of the illicit substances. Also for many prisoners, a clean record of substance abuse is crucial to securing an endorsement for good behaviour when they appeal their sentences or are brought up for review.

Drug Testing technician

Perhaps this one is a little redundant but the most obvious use of these kits is if you work for a drug testing company. Nearly 50% of all private employers in the United States conduct some form of drug screening on their staff, either on the basis of random testing, pre-employment screening or as a regular procedure. In the UK the figure is much lower, but they are growing increasingly popular as employers seek to reduce their insurance premiums by taking every possible step to ensure their workforce is responsible at all times.

The Police

The chances are that if you ever see a drug testing kit in real life, it will have belonged to a police officer. Most likely, a police officer who pulled you over for dangerous driving. Whilst more extensive drug testing equipment can be found at the station its extremely common for officers to carry breathalyser kits. Every policeman or woman has the power to challenge you to take a breath test for alcohol consumption if you’re thought to be under the influence whilst driving -refuse and they can arrest you.
