The Resolution to Adapting The Easy Way Out
Posted on January 21, 2010

Nothing is more obnoxious than slender individuals complaining about their inability to gain weight –
I have a fast metabolism,
It is hard for me to gain weight,
I do not have an enormous appetite and time to eat,
My genetics are bad,
I have exhausted all methods to help gain weight,
I am a hardgainer.
And my reply to them would be: Quit! Stop going to the gym because it is never going to help.
I was the personification of a hardgainer at six feet tall, weighing 147 pounds when I graduated from high school. Eventually I achieved my goal with determination, proper training, hard work and healthy eating.
Unfortunately, I was smitten with tuberculosis and though I was on bed rest for six months, I picked up from where I left off once I recovered, refusing to give into my poor genetics.
I trained hard, ate when I could not longer swallow another morsel, I slept early at nights and refrained from partying and drinking.
Over my fourteen years of bodybuilding, I have come across many hard-core hardgainers who never gave up their goal of attaining the perfect body.
My friends and clients Jim Wendler, Mike Schwalb and Todd Coker are examples of undying determination to reach their goals. Jim suffered a serious disease but overcame it to squat 1000 pounds in competition with a body weight of over 280 pounds. Mike worked at nights when his friends partied and gained 100 pounds. Todd went from 130 pounds to over 250! And one of Jim’s teammate went from 220 pounds to 313 pounds within two years.
To quote a funny but inspiring experience, once during dinner, Matt was forcing himself to eat even though he was full and we were laughing to see him perspire so much and then he almost choked on a bite of chicken. Now this is called dedication! The list of classic hardgainers could go on.
Drive, desire, dedication and an iron will was what drove them to excel, never succumbing to the hardgainer mindset.
Most of all, never make excuses.
