Most of the diet plan these days focuses on lowering the carbohydrate intake. The Atkins diet and the South Beach diet are two such very popular diet plans. The problem with these diet plans is that they impose severe restrictions on carbohydrates. This means that you will have to eliminate many of the foods you are currently eating and plan a different menu altogether. This can be difficult for most people.

The Atkins diet is divided into four phases-the induction phase, the ongoing weight loss phase, pre-maintenance stage and maintenance phase. The induction phase requires you to stave off carbohydrates to a very large extent. As a matter of fact, carbohydrate intake during the first phase should be as low as 20 grams per day. Dieters should derive carbohydrates from vegetables. Fruits are not recommended because they contain sugars. Such restrictions make it very difficult for people to stick on to the induction phase and most people do not make it beyond this point.

Coming over to the South Beach diet. Although not as stringent as the Atkins diet, this plan also requires you to stave off carbs as much as possible during the first phase. You will have to avoid foods like potatoes, pasta, rice, pastry, baked items, alcohol etc. Although this diet plan does permit you to eat certain foods in unlimited proportions, they are mainly high protein, low-carb foods. For instance, you can eat unlimited amounts of lettuce but you will have to restrict intake of tomatoes, onions and peanuts. In this diet plan, you are permitted to eat sweet snacks but only 75 calories worth per day. Even a single cookie contains more calories than that.

Another important point to note is that both these diets require you to stick to a low carb diet plan forever. Of course, the first phase is the strictest and there are some relaxations in the rules as you go ahead. But you cannot return to your normal diet habits. You will have to make permanent and drastic changes in your lifestyle to reap the benefits of these diet plans.

Overall, we feel these diet plans are not practical and do not recommend them for most people. We have designed a new Fat Burning Diet for the average dieter.
