Low carb diets have gained immense popularity these days. These diet plans work on the theory that carbohydrates are the main source of calories and the body does not necessarily need all these calories. Therefore by eliminating carbohydrates, one will be able to reduce overall calorie consumption. However, is this really a good weight loss solution? We don’t think so.

Low carbohydrate diets are just a fad. Most people find it very difficult to stick to such diet plans. These diet plans result in severe problems and side effects in the dieter. Strict and severe carbohydrate restrictions are not healthy. The calorie restriction begins to take a toll on the body and leaves a person tired, drained and frustrated.

There are many popular low carb diet plans. The Atkins diet is the most popular one. In this diet plan, there are four phases. During the first phase, there is a severe restriction on carbohydrates. As a matter of fact, the recommended carbohydrate intake during this period is as low as 20 grams per day. This is really low. Do you know that even a large apple has more than 20 grams of carbohydrates? Such restrictions are too much for an ordinary dieter to bear. Not only is it impossible to stick to such a plan for more than two or three days, it takes its toll on the body too. At the end of the day, the dieter is left tired, hungry and miserable.

Now all low carbohydrate diets are not as severe as the Atkins diet. The South Beach diet is also a low carb diet which is supposed to be easy. However, even this diet plan has its own drawbacks. The first phase of this also involves cutting down on carbohydrates like pasta, rice, potatoes, pastry, baked items, alcohol etc. Many people find that even this is too hard for them to follow.

A good diet plan is one which is easy to follow and produces substantial results. Diets which leave a person tired, drained and discouraged are just fads. The body needs the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and healthy fats. This applies even when one is dieting.
