Misconceived Ideas about Muscle Building

Question: Of all the inconsistent weight training instruction available in books, online, magazines and TV, what are the more famous or misleading myths?

Answer:

  • A heavy volume of training is essential.
    This is one of the oldest myths being blindly followed to this day. There is no evidence to support this allegation. Gaining muscle or mass quickly through this method is not a healthy way to go about it.
  • Muscles need to be worked from a multitude of angles.
  • A full vibrant warm up is essential before training. A sprint, though, needs a warm up.
  • Bodypart splits are very effective.
  • A colossal amount of supplements. Truth is, supplements are ineffective and expensive.
  • Steroids are essential for making progress. This is a despondent attitude that should be avoided.
  • Question: It is commonly said that genetics plays an important part in muscle growth, making it impossible for slender individuals to put on mass.

    Answer: This is the biggest excuse on record. While an individual’s ultimate growth depends on genetics, most people have never reached their full genetic potential. Using this as an alibi, one will never derive the full results from the training.

    Some of those who have not been bestowed with great genetics have made incredible progress and have eventually earned recognition from others. This was achieved by the right exercise, good food and an adequate amount of rest, coupled with mental toughness. Trainers circulating this notion are misleading themselves and others.

    Question: What can be said to the belief that individuals advanced in years can never put on mass or gain energy?

    Answer: That belief has no truth to support it. Individuals in their 40s and 50s have been trained to put on size and gain strength, as did a friend of mine who gained over 20 lbs over a year of workout. Although the volume of mass gained may be comparatively lesser than a younger individual, it takes a smart work out and patience to achieve success.

    The fact that men do not reach their full strength potential till sometime after 30 proves that they should not take a back-seat once they cross 30, but on the contrary, keep training hard and believing in themselves to achieve what they set out to do.
