Mike Mentzer: A Genius or a Crazy

Posted on May 10, 2010

Background:

Mike Mentzer was a famous bodybuilder who competed back in the 70’s and 80’s against the Arnold, himself. He was a huge supporter of extremely low volume training. He had some essential view points and his own way of expressing them. He had called Arnold about his high volume training protocols and said what a complete waste of time it all was.

Mike Mentzer’s basic theory:

His basic theory was that we are all horribly over-trained in sets and overall volume but under-trained in concentration. He recommended to do somewhere in between 1 to 3 set per body part, once in every 7-21 days. He also knew that high protein diets are unnecessary and just another scam operated in the bodybuilding industry.

Some people thought that Mike Mentzer was a genius and they have learned a great deal from him while making incredible progress by making use of his advices. But others thought that he was completely insane and needed to be committed.

Was he a genius?

Frankly saying, No But he was surely a smart guy and a rational thinker. He never accepted anything blindly what everyone else did. He always thought for himself and questioned everything.

The problem with Mike was that he was a little off with his frequency recommendations and that the concentration he promoted was a bit too high and unnecessary. Some of the extreme concentration techniques he promoted may have even been counter productive.
But it doesn’t mean that Mike’s ideas weren’t effective.

Mike knew very well, the dangers of overtraining. He also realized how unnecessary and counterproductive all that useless junk volumes really were. Mike knew and urged the people that if they couldn’t get the job done the sets they normally used then they weren’t training hard enough.

Whatever Mike Mentzer contributed to the strength training world is respectable and will always consider him a pioneer in the business.
