Does counting calories lead to weight loss?

Posted on January 9, 2010

If you are looking to lose weight, you might have heard the phrase count calories over and over again. Counting calories seem to be the ultimate requirement to lose weight effectively. Several diet plans require you to count calories in every bite you take. But is counting and reducing calories the only effective way to weight loss?

Many fad diets have led people into believing that the best way to lose weight is to starve oneself. They claim eating 3000 calories per day causes you to gain weight, cutting down calorie intake to 1500 should keep those pounds from piling up right?

Calories are the source of energy for the body. Your body needs energy to carry out all metabolic activities and to sustain all the organ systems. The calories you consume give you the energy you need to carry out your daily activities. Your body needs all kinds of nutrients in the form of proteins, carbohydrates and even healthy fats. Carbohydrates provide energy, proteins build muscles and tissues, vitamins and healthy fats are essential for overall health and hormone balance. Deficiency of any of these nutrients results in several health problems. When you drastically reduce your food intake, you are putting yourself at risk of nutrient deficiencies.

If you decide to go in for a diet plan which involves cutting down drastically on calorie intake, you may find that it is possible for a day or two. But soon, the dearth of calories will begin to take its toll on your body. As a result, you will feel hungry and tired. You will begin to experience stomach cramps, acidity and headache. If you are motivated enough, you may be able to survive skipping breakfast and lunch but by the time dinner time arrives, you will be too hungry to care about calories and you tend to overeat. This is the vicious cycle that starvation diets result in.

When you cut down calories excessively you may be able to lose weight initially but soon, your weight begins to remain static. The body weight stays stuck at a plateau phase. This is because all the initial weight loss you experienced is actually due to loss of water, not fat. So you see, it is impossible to lose weight by starving yourself.
