Once you have decided to embark on a diet plan you will be amazed to find that there is a plethora of plans available. Almost all of them target carbs. Some eliminate carbs altogether whereas others stress the importance of good carbs. Still others focus on avoiding bad carbs.

So, what exactly are cabs? Carbs is the short form for carbohydrates. These are molecules which act as fuel for the body. They are responsible for providing the body with energy. Carbohydrates are made up of simple sugar molecules liked together by chemical bonds. When you take in carbohydrates, the sugar molecules are released, giving the body an energy spike. This is why you feel a surge of energy when you eat foods like chocolates, pastries etc.

Carbohydrates are essential for the body but should be taken only in limited amounts. Too much of carbohydrates mean too many calories. Excess caries which cannot be utilized by the body gets deposited as fat. Now, another point to remember is that not all carbohydrates are fattening. There are two kinds of carbohydrates- good carbs and bad carbs.

Bad carbs refer to the kind of carbohydrates you find in sugary foods. But the problem is that bad carbs are often hidden under a healthy packaging. There are several misconceptions about these carbs. Some people are under the impression that replacing sugar with honey can help them stay away from bad carbs present in sugar but the fact is that there are just as much carbs in honey as in sugar. It does not make a difference.

Why are bad carbs dangerous? They cause the body抯 sugar levels to rise as soon as they are consumed. When there is an overload of sugar, the body has to overproduce a hormone called insulin. This hormone converts the excess sugar into fat, causing weight gain. Eating such foods result in a see-saw high and low levels of energy.

Healthy carbs are present in foods like fruits, vegetables etc and do not cause sugar levels to spike. They maintain sugar and insulin levels in a stable level. In other words, healthy carbs give the body the energy it requires, without disturbing sugar levels and causing fat accumulation. These foods promote fat burning and prevent the energy levels from rising and falling drastically.
