Intervals

Intervals allow you to burn a lot of calories in short time and keep your metabolism high, after you finish doing them. But if you are training your legs two or three times per week, you can’t do intervals more than once a week because then it will ultimately lead to overtraining. You can contradict this to some extent by keeping your leg training volume low and doing your intervals on the same day as your weight training. You just can’t do five or six sets of legs two nor three days a week with 30 minutes of intervals as it will all go in to the vein. You should also remember that you have to do your intervals on your training days, not on your off days.

Generally it is advised to do 30-60 second intervals when they are being performed on an inactive bike. Most of people take these advices and apply them to sprinting. But the fact is that most average people can’t do it. World class athletes can sprint for longer time, but not everyone else.

Don’t believe in the fact then just try it:

If you don’t believe in this fact then you are free to go and try it. Just warm up systematically and try to sprint for 60 seconds straight. Sprinting for 30-60 seconds is impossible for most of the people and it also increases the risk of injury greatly.

If you keep your sprint distances and times very short, you can decrease the risk of injury because, you never going to hit top speed. This segment has the least chances of injury. So, most of the people should run 20-50 yard sprints because it keeps you at top speed for a very short period of time and you will not suffer from an injury. If you run at top speed for too long the chance of a break down and injury is greatly increased.

It is recommended that non athletes should never try to sprint for 30-60 seconds straight because it could be dangerous. You can use adequate rest periods between sets to reduce injuries. And running with a sled slows you down to avoid top speeds and makes sprinting much safer.
