Teeth Whitening: How Does It Work?

The process of teeth whitening is becoming increasingly popular, as you may know. There are home teeth whitening processes, laser light teeth whitening processes done in dentist’s offices, and even teeth whitening toothpastes and strips that are placed on your teeth once or twice daily. The various methods are sold at a wide range of places and some types of teeth whitening take longer than others. For instance, simple teeth bleaching at dentists takes a few office visits to see results where as zoom light teeth whitening takes only one office visit that shouldn’t last more than about an hour in the chair.

Different products and services do different things, one of the most common ways due to its affordability is that done with the use of brush on whitening gels, toothpastes or even sprays. These products contain chemicals called carbamide peroxide in small amounts, and when exposed to heat or extreme light they grind down into tiny oxygen molecules. After being broken down by the heat or light source and turning into oxygen molecules they work their way through our enamel and polish off the yellow and brown stains on our teeth, once they have reached this point light passes through each tooth with more ease and they then appear whiter in color. With this method in most cases the teeth appear whiter sometime between an hour and days, and it is done without harming the enamel.

Most teeth whitening products available today contain things that promote healthy teeth such as sodium hydroxide. These products also work to make the enamel stronger while still giving your teeth that white shine. When done professionally, teeth whitening shields are used to protect the gums and lips from the harmful aspects of the procedure and are placed in your mouth by your dentist before he beings the teeth whitening process. This is most seen in the zoom teeth whitening process as it uses a laser light to whiten when combined with a gel coating on your teeth.

Whichever process or teeth whitening product you use, it’s always a good idea to talk to your dentist and do your research so you are sure you’re choosing the right product for you. Dentists are often able to tell you which products could do your teeth some good and which ones you should steer clear of entirely when shopping for a teeth whitening system that can work for you.

I’m thinking about getting my teeth whitened by a dentist. How much will it cost roughly? and is it just one visit?
