Recently resveratrol has drawn a lot of media attentions as there was a show for 60 minutes in Oprah and one in Discovery Channel. There is something special about resveratrol. It’s quality to offer protective benefits to cell, enhancing cell functions, boosting energy level, burning fat, cutting down your weight and increasing your metabolism.

Red wine is considered to impart beneficial effects to heart because it contains a substance named resveratrol. Here are some facts regarding red wine and its effect on heart.

It is believed that modicum doses of red wine are healthy for heart. The certain substance with alcohol in red wine called antioxidant helps prevent heart attacks. As they increase the good cholesterol and protect artery damage. Doctors too find that “something” in red wine appears to benefit heart but they are not sure about that “something”. It is the scientific community, after several researches, thinks that antioxidant like flavonoids or the substance called resveratrol present in red wine offers heart-healthy benefits. But what is puzzling that it is not the antioxidant alone in red wine even the alcohol in red wine appears to be beneficial to heart. Let us see what the secrets of red wine are.

What makes red wind healthy:

Studies conducted on red wine finds out controversial results. Some studies say that red wine has the kind of alcohol that is more heart-healthy than other type alcohol. But some other studies show that alcohol in red wine is no better than what is found in beer, white wine or liquor. No clear cut evidence is found to prove that alcohol in red wine has any better heart-healthy benefits than the alcohol in others.

The studies found that antioxidants called polyphenols present in red wine help to keep safe the lining of blood vessels in our heart and these antioxidants are found in two different forms: flavonoids and nonflavonoids.

Flavonoids: they are found in variety of foods and fruits like orange, apples, grape juice, cocoa and tea. They are found in greater quantity in red wine and little in white wine and beer.
Nonflavonoids: In recent studies have found that these antioxidants prevent arteries becoming clogged with fat. They are present in red wine as resveratrol and currently drawing more attention from researchers.

Resveratrol in red wine is the key ingredient that seems to protect damage to blood vessels reducing the “bad” cholesterol content in our blood. However, most researches have been conducted on animals with resveratrol, not on human beings. It has been beneficial to mice as it appears to control obesity, diabetes; both are conducive to heart disease. But the dose as given to mice to control these health problems shows a person would need to consume 100 to 1000 bottles of red wine per day!

Some other studies show that resveratrol could reduce the inflammation and blood clotting; both of which are responsible for heat attacks. More researches are required to done on the subject to confirm how resveratrol work.

Resveratrol supplements are available in the market as some companies sell them but there is no concrete evidence to endorse these supplements. We have to wait till researches come out with concrete evidence of resveratrol’s heart-health benefits.

Resveratrol available in grapes and other foods:

Since wine is made from grapes and grapes are also found enriched with resveratrol, simply drinking grape juice is suggested to get resveratrol without drinking alcohol. Studies have suggested that red and purple grape contain resveratrol offering the same benefits of drinking red wine.

There are other foods like blueberries, peanuts, cranberries contain resveratrol. Though it is not sure eating them is equally beneficial as drinking red wine or not.
How does alcohol help heart:

Several studies have found that drinking any alcohol in moderate quantity helps your heart not only the alcohol in found in red wine. The reasons found are:

Alcohol raises the HDL or high density lipoprotein cholesterol or “good” cholesterol.
It prevents the development of blood clots.

Limiting the level of LDL or low density lipoprotein cholesterol or “bad” cholesterol, alcohol prevents the artery damage.

Red Wine’s potential to prevent heart attack seems promising. Record shows those who drink red wine in moderate doses regularly have a lower risk of heart disease. However, more researches are to be done to find out what exactly causes this.

American Heart Association or National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommend drinking alcohol to prevent heart ailments as alcohol is addictive and can cause other health complications.

Drinking alcohol in higher doses enhances the risk of high blood pressure, liver damage, high triglycerides, obesity, certain types of cancer besides the risk of meeting road accidents and various other problems. It is found that even small amount of alcohol intake may weaken heart muscle and cause heart failure in some people. It is always better to consult your doctor about the benefits and risks of alcohol related to your health conditions.
