Removing Soft Contact Lenses

Soft contact lenses can be quite a challenge for beginners. You might have some small setbacks while removing them. Unlike rigid gas permeable contact lenses that have plungers, soft contact lenses are removed using your hands (fingers). Plungers are not recommended for soft lens, although, there is a new tweezer–like tool said to be made for soft lenses.

Here are the steps with some tips that will help removing the soft lenses using your hands.

1. Gather all the materials you are going to need. Including all the solutions and the cases. Remember to remove your contact lenses in clean and well- lighted areas. You may also put a drop or two of your rewetting solution before removing it.

2. Wash your hands with plain soaps. Never use moisturizing soaps. Dry them with lint-free materials.

3. Bow your head a little and look up to the mirror, focus your eyes on a spot in a mirror. This will help you see the white on your eyes that is under the lens.

If you can not slide the lens, then you must have moved your eyes. Close your eyes for a few minutes, then try again.

If you can not keep your eye open, use your other hand to pull up your eyelids, and then pull down the lower lids.

If you can not pinch up the contact lens, try moving it more to the white of the eye.If you have long fingernails do not pinch the contact lens, you might end up scratching your eyes. You can just use the pad of your finger to push the lens towards the lower lid, until it rolls over to the lower lids, it will then pop out. Remember to do this slowly, so that the lens will not jump out, and you can catch it easily.

4. Move the lens to the white of the eye, this will bunch up a little and then pick it up with your fingers.

5. Remember which eye you removed the lens from. Always start with the right going to the left.

6. Repeat with the other eye.

Removing contact lenses is just one part of the whole regimen. Cleaning and caring for your contact lenses would need more attention. Make sure that you know these cleaning and caring steps so that you will avoid any eye infection. This will also make sure that you can use contact lenses for a long time.
