LDL vs HDL

You have probably heard this mentioned in many places, but what does LDL and HDL stand for? LDL means low density lipoprotein and HDL is high density lipoprotein. Lipoproteins are a form of fatty acid transport. Fat is not soluble in water, nor in blood, so it needs to be bound to these proteins creating thus a vehicle for the former.

Basically, LDL takes cholesterol to the periphery and HDL brings it to the liver. So why is LDL bad and HDL good? LDL is very rich in cholesterol and has a somehow unstable nature so it has the tendency to bind to blood vessels, leading to a inflammatory response which in time builds up to atherosclerosis. HDL on the other hand is more stable, has more compounding proteins, thus making it more stable, and on top of this takes cholesterol from the tissues to the liver for processing and removal. The whole metabolic pathway is much more complicated because cholesterol is a very important part of the whole metabolism, so we can’t just get rid of it like we do with garbage. For example, besides being a building block for cells, it has the fundamental role of being an energy supply in periods of fasting.

LDL transforms into HDL so we have a good chance in aiding this transformation to improve HDL/LDL ratio. Studies show that some weight loss plant extracts, hoodia gordonii just to name one, have the ability to improve the above mentioned ratio, by increasing HDL plasma levels  and decreasing LDL cholesterol. If you combine this with fitness, exercise and a good diet you get a powerful lever for burning fat off your belly or thighs.

There are loads of websites out there that sell these natural extracts along with advice for correct diet and weight loss programs. So, look no further because you are one click away from the beginning of the end for fat!
