Hoodia gordonii, a novel method towards successful weight loss is gaining momentum nowadays. Hoodia is a cactus-like plant found exclusively in the semi-desert areas of South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Botswana. Hoodia is being used by the San Bushmen for years to kill appetite, reduce thirst and to fight against trivial infections.
Hoodia plant has about 15 different species. Only the Hoodia gordonii species has an active ingredient ?p57. p57 is a sterol glycoside that acts directly to the hypothalamus of the brain. It sends a signal to it that the level of blood sugar is high. Then the hypothalamus sends another signal to the satiety center?and in turn our appetite is reduced.
Only Hoodia gordonii has the active ingredient. You will find thousands of websites selling pure Hoodia extract. The extract may be pure and taken from Hoodia, but may not be from Hoodia gordonii. You have to check the label for this.
You will also observe that a pill is prepared from Hoodia gordonii plant. But the leaves, the skin, larger branches and the roots do not have any medicinal property. Only the small branches and the flowers contain p57. Be careful about the ingredients while purchasing. You may be paying your hard earned money for nothing! You should check the concentration of the Hoodia preparation also. On an average, 10:1 (w/w) preparation is acceptable.
Some of the available Hoodia preparations also contain some other antioxidants, dietary supplements and other weight loss boosters. As there is no statistical data available for these combinations, it is better to purchase a 100% natural Hoodia gordonii product.
CDC did not approve Hoodia till date as a medicine for weight loss. However, you may look for a CITES certificate related to Hoodia gordonii while purchasing.
