Goji Berry : A Boon From The Himalayas

Nobody in the Western world heard about this miraculous plant a couple of years back. But recently Goji berry is gaining popularity among health conscious people throughout the world. Goji berry is a small (1-3 meters in height), deciduous plant found extensively in Tibetan and Mongolian Himalayas. Goji berry is also named as Murali, Chinese wolfberry and matrimony vine in different parts of the world. The fruit of this plant is a small bright orange-red berry containing numerous tiny seeds.

Goji berry in well known for its nutritious value among the Chinese for at least 5000 years. It is full of vitamins, minerals and natural antioxidants. The fruit is one of the richest sources of potent antioxidants like Beta-carotene and zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin can absorb the blue spectrum of the white light and helps in the protection of retina. An unconfirmed study reports that symptoms in the patients having AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) and glaucoma have improved much. Practitioners in traditional Chinese medicine were using Goji berry to fight against tissue growth for centuries, but any claim for Goji berry to fight against cancer is unconfirmed and it should not be overemphasized.

Goji berry juice is also used in treatment of rough skin and other common skin lesions. The phytochemicals present in Goji berry can boost the immune system and there is unconfirmed report that it can induce the pituitary gland to release Human Growth Factor. Thus it may help in increasing our height. It is also helpful to fight against high blood pressure and other heart problems, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes and chronic fatigue syndrome.
