Claritin Relief from Allergy without Drowsiness

Allergy, one of the commonest diseases we are facing in our day to day life. It is the hypersensitivity reaction of our immune system to any object that our body identifies as unwanted. A rapid and disproportionate activation of some white blood cells along with a certain type of antibody (Immunoglobulin E) occurs when an allergen enters our body. The basophils, mast cells, monocytes release histamine, serotonin and combined with IgE, they create an excessive inflammatory response to the allergen. The response varies from person to person. Same amount of allergen may produce a severe allergic response to an individual but may not produce any reaction to others. Allergic reaction is highly specific in nature in that way.

There are allergy medications to prevent this hypersensitivity reaction the antiallergic drugs. The medicines that were invented earlier produce somnolence. You cannot go to your work or drive a car after taking the first generation antiallergic preparations like pheniramine maleate. They can cross the blood brain barrier and inhibit the central nervous system causing drowsiness.

The second generation antihistaminics like loratidine (trade name Claritin) was prepared with a view to combat this drug induced somnolence. Claritin is an allergy relief product that has been used extensively throughout the world. Claritin blocks the action of histamine, thus minimizing the symptoms of allergy. Claritin acts on the H1 receptors, where the histamine acts. Claritin is a big molecule and cannot penetrate the blood brain barrier. Therefore, it does not cause drowsiness when taken at the recommended dose. This is a FDA approved medicine. The most common side effects of Claritin are headache, fatigue and dry mouth. Pregnant and nursing mothers should take the medicine if it is absolutely necessary.
