Wheat plays a very important role in our diet because it is used to make bread which is one of the most commonly eaten foods in the world. Without wheat bread would not form properly or look the way it does.
When an individual suffers an allergic reaction to wheat two things can happen, they can either develop mild symptoms or they can develop severe symptoms. If mild symptoms occur than an individual will experience skin rash, hives and eczema. Some more serious symptoms include stomach pains, nausea and vomiting. Although these symptoms cause great discomfort they are not potentially fatal, but severe symptoms of wheat allergy are.
If an individual suffers from a severe allergic reaction to wheat, they may develop breathing problems, their tongue may swell up and their throat may also tighten. In the worse case scenario they may go into asphylantic shock and they may develop heart failure that can lead to death. If an individual suffers from a severe allergic reaction medical attention must be sought immediately. The individual should be injected with either epinephrine or adrenalin, these two chemicals can greatly increase the chances of survival. Once the symptoms subside the individual should be checked over by a doctor.
Diagnosis of a wheat allergy can be pretty difficult, the reason is that there are several foods that contain wheat or wheat derivatives. If a person consumes a lot of foods that contain wheat derivatives, it makes it more difficult to diagnose the allergen. People with wheat allergies, who unwittingly consume wheat in their diet, find that they are ill regularly, when someone is in this situation it is much harder to pinpoint the cause of the allergic reaction.
Diagnosing the allergen by process of elimination is clearly the best way to find the culprit in cases like this. The first thing that a doctor will do is to try and eliminate wheat from the environment and the diet of the person with the allergy. Cutting wheat out from the diet is a very difficult task because there are so many foods that contain wheat or wheat derivatives. This task is even harder to carry out when it comes to children because there are so many foods that children enjoy that contain wheat derivatives, especially things like chocolate bars and some crisps.
It is the duty of the parent to make sure their children are aware of what they can and can’t eat. In recent years the task of eliminating wheat derivatives from the diet has become a lot easier, this is because there are now many wheat alternatives available in shops.
