Stop Smoking - Pick A Date, And Stick To It!

Recent studies have shown that a smoker can only muster the will and fortitude to stop smoking once every 3 to 4 years. Considering the life of a smoker is significantly shorter than that of his non-smoking counterpart, that is not too many attempts!

You must succeed!

The first thing to do when you decide to quit smoking is to pick a date, and stick to it against all odds. Pick a date that is far in the future, but not too far. It has to be close enough that you will think that soon, you will be free, but it has to be far enough that thinking about it does not stress you out.

The closer you get to your assigned stop-smoking date, the more you will think about it. This is perfectly normal, a natural human response. Try, if possible to go with the flow.

Remember that whenever a little voice in your head tells you that it would be Ok to skip the date, maybe extend your smoking for another week, it is not you talking but the nicotine monster inside your head that desperately wants to keep your addiction alive.

Keep firmly in mind that on the date you have set, you will kill the monster. You will finally be free of this disgusting habit. Repeat to yourself your personal mantra, and make it convincing. Of course, the little nicotine monster will thrash about like mad trying to get you to smoke cigarettes again, but don’t let it. It is in its dying throes, and feeling it agonize and die will be the sweetest feeling you’ve ever experienced.

Addiction is an ugly disease. It makes you do things that you would normally avoid. It the case of smoking, it makes you ingest poisonous gases in your lungs in order to deliver nicotine to your brain. People have all sorts of addictions, from drugs to gambling to alcohol, but smoking is the most pernicious. Smoking is legal, cigarettes are easily available, and despite the recent stigma that afflicts smokers, it is still relatively socially acceptable.

Pick a stop smoking date, and keep to it. Don’t be side-tracked by the cunning whispers of your personal Nico-Demon, and look forward to killing it.
