People come to me all the time and ask me why they’re not getting any gains in the gym. You know what the first thing I ask them is? “What is your diet like?” I usually get some lame answer like, “I eat pretty well most of the time.” This usually means these folks think they know what they should be eating, but they really have little to no idea.

Fact is, your muscles need fuel to rebuild after workouts. The way your muscles grow is they are repaired using amino acids your body produces one way or another. This happens after your workout and then for the next 48-72 hours. What you need to do is feed your muscles the proper nutrients so they can grow as much as possible.

It’s not a big secret that protein is the main ingredient in muscle growth. The secret is why, when, and how. Proteins are very easy for your body to break down and turn into the necessary amino acids that your muscles need to grow. Because of this, you need to have protein running through your system AT ALL TIMES.

Many folks make the mistake of chugging a protein shake before or after their workout, then they eat like crap for the rest of the day. You won’t get very far doing this. Like I said earlier, the muscle building process happens in the days following your workouts, not during your workout. Because of this, you need to eat high quality foods with high amounts of protein all throughout the day. Keep feeding your muscles protein at every meal, and with every snack throughout the day for maximum growth.

Along with feeding your muscles throughout the day, you’ll also need to think about what you’re eating before and after your workouts. Make sure you have some good carbs and protein in your system before your workout. This will make sure you have the energy to make it through. Aim to eat about an hour before your workout. This will give you plenty of time to digest so you don’t get sick during. Drink water during, not sports drinks. Sports drinks are full of sodium. Safe those for after your workouts to replenish your glycemic levels.

Now here is an amazing tip that almost no one knows. Immediately following your workouts, your muscles are primed for an influx of carbs. This is a window that lasts about an hour. Feed your muscles with a good sports drink and some good high quality carbs like you’ll find in whole grains and fruit. Down a bit of protein in this snack too go give you a great start on building muscle. This tip will dramatically increase your gains.
