What in heaven’s name is the link between your pearly whites and your gray matter? A lot, apparently.
In a study conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), test subjects instinctively judged the intelligence, attractiveness and success of others based on how white their teeth were!
Yes… the color of your teeth influences others’ opinion of you much more than you’d imagine. A dazzling bright smile conveys a positive impression of intelligence, warmth, friendliness, assuredness and confidence. Conversely, people think poorly of someone with dull or discolored teeth. All things being equal, how white your teeth can make or break your career prospects and budding relationships.
It’s a fact… people are more receptive to individuals with the a brilliant smile. White teeth evokes a warm, fuzzy feeling in others that’s hard to explain. My personal theory is that as humans, we’re programmed to associate cleanliness, health and care with clean white teeth. If an individual has beautiful white teeth, he/she must have good genes and/or is diligent in personal grooming. And since good things seldom arrive singly, we subconsciously attribute other positive qualities onto the proud owner of those white teeth. It does seem rather shallow and superficial how outward appearances can influence our assessment of unrelated mental and social faculties.
But there’s no denying the fact. Human-kind has a habit of judging a book by its cover. And the AACD study validates this stark truth.
As Albert Einstein once said, “Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one”. Rightly or wrongly, if we think that whiter teeth equals a higher IQ, that illusion becomes a reality.
So, it seems… people with whiter teeth are indeed cleverer!
