Scientists Discover Link Between Night Vision and AMD

Researchers find that night vision may be a precursor to age-related macular degeneration and can help doctors identify future macular degeneration patients.

The five year study examined night vision patients and found that the biological factors behind night vision and age-related macular degeneration are typically related, thus linking the two eye diseases.

The study noted that people with the worst night vision also experienced a dramatic decrease in visual acuity and development of choroidal neovascularization and geographic atrophy, says Gui-shuang Ying, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, in the November Opthalmology issue.

“Because of the ease of ascertainment compared with testing dark adaptation or rod sensitivity, assessing night vision symptoms may be useful in identifying patients with early or intermediate age-related macular degeneration who are at a relatively high risk of progression,” researchers find.

Finding the Link
The night vision and AMD study was conducted after analyzing the results from the Compilations of Age-related Macular Degeneration Prevention Trial, where it was found that low-intensity lasers did not reduce vision loss symptoms in dry AMD sufferers.

Each participant was asked to complete a night vision questionnaire. The lower the score, the worse the participant suffered from impaired night vision. The study found that those scoring lower on the questionnaire also had a significantly higher risk of vision loss and AMD symptoms.

Researchers found that rod photoreceptor degeneration, which causes night vision, typically precedes cone degeneration, which ultimately results in AMD.

These breakthrough findings may help doctors determine future AMD sufferers, and start treating AMD before it progresses into advanced stages.
