Obesity in America - How to Beat It

Obesity in America continues to climb each year and continues to be a major health crisis. Who are the obese? Just look around. It may be a person walking down the street, a stranger passing you down the aisle, your neighbor stopping to say hello or maybe it’s that person staring you in the mirror. All, unfortunately, are either obese or seriously in need of losing weight.

What is the primary cause of this problem? Of course it’s easy to say over eating. Go to any restaurant and just look at the portion sizes. The worse offenders are of course the “all you can eat spots”. And if you go to your average fast food chain, their feature item will be 700 or more calories and this is not even including the fries and super large soda that comes with it.

But in reality, overeating is not the cause, but the symptom. The real cause is our eating habits. Even though we may have been taught the food pyramid in school and how to select healthy foods, our real habits comes from our families. For the most part we inherit their eating habits and choices of food.

To break these bad habits we must develop a new method of eating– a method that has had proven success when it comes to losing weight. One such method is meal frequency and calorie cycling. This simple plan is based on the concept that by increasing the number of meals you eat each day and by varying the amount of calories you intake, you will increase your metabolism.

For instance, a common practice would be to eat 5 meals a day with a maximum calorie intake of 2500 calories. The next day you would again eat 5 meals, but your total calorie intake would be only 2200. This habit of eating has helped many people lose and more importantly maintain their weight.
