Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux disease could be a precursor to several more serious ailments if left unattended. Simply called by some as heartburn, this happens when the patient suffers an episode of discomfort like the burning pain in the chest leading towards the throat. This is because of the acid and other liquids from the stomach that regurgitated upwards to the esophagus. Others would even think they are having a heart attack because of the pain and discomfort. This is common for adults who are beyond their 40th birthday, but this could actually afflict anyone, even infants. There is also no distinction for gender as far as this disease is concerned.

The regurgitating stomach acid irritates and may even damage the lining of the esophagus. This could sometimes result to severe pain, coughing, or hoarseness of voice. Some people even have these stomach acids reach their mouth that chronic occurrence would also result to the erosion of teeth enamel.

Acid reflux disease is known to be triggered by several factors. This includes spicy foods, acidic foods, alcohol, cigarette and coffee. One could say that these triggers practically could change one’s lifestyle to avoid GERD-precisely. Lifestyle change is one of the most recommended measures of addressing and eliminating acid reflux disease.

This change in the way one lives includes, more specifically, the change in diet. The “trigger” foods mentioned above, and more, are to be avoided while high fiber foods are recommended. It is not only the kind of foods that are supposed to be modified. How you eat is also moderated like one is discouraged from eating large meals. Instead, they can partake of foods in small amounts at intervals (this sounds like diabetic diet too!)

It must be remembered that different patients of gastroesophageal reflux disease have different characteristic triggers. People have different degree of reactions to different triggers so it would be better for those with chronic cases to start recording the food they eat and the reaction they get. This would be a very efficient means of determining what works for you and what does not. With this method, you may be relieved to note that while spicy, tomato-based foods are usual triggers, your food journal have shown that you did not experience an episode of heartburn everytime you eat them. If your favorite food is pizza, you will thank your journal for clearing it!

This is also what your doctor would recommend to help him diagnose your ailment.

Other things that you have to avoid besides some types of foods would be getting to bed within two hours after a meal. Gravity would help keep those stomach fluids from regurgitating up to your throat. For those who are suffering several instances of waking up in the middle of the night gagging with stomach fluids in their mouth, raising the head of your bed would be of help.

Just like any other ailments, it would be best to always seek the help of a competent physician regarding your acid reflux problems, for prescription medicines and some advise regarding some medications that are available for sale over-the-counter.
