Why Paxil CR is prescribed and how does it work
Paxil CR is used to help relieve a variety of emotional problems that interfere with your ability to function, especially major depression. Changes in appetite, sleep patterns, loss of interest in people and activities they enjoy, feelings of worthlessness and suicidal thoughts are all things that this medication helps manage. It is also good for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorders, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. It has also been prescribed to women to help with premenstrual dysphoric disorder.
Paxil CR is part of a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These inhibitors slow the process of serotonin being absorbed between the nerves, boosting how much is available in the brain. By slowing down this process, your moods become more stable and more pleasant. You will begin to see improvements within one to four weeks of taking Paxil CR and by continuing it thereafter.
Taking Paxil CR and its side effects
Take your Paxil CR once a day in the morning. It can be taken with or without food and if you are taking any other medications make sure you let your doctor know and make sure they are safe to take. Swallow it whole or if taken a liquid version, shake the oral suspension well before using. If you miss a dose of your medication, skip it and take the next dose at your regularly scheduled time.
Because everyone reacts differently to medication, side effects can only be anticipated. If they get severe, check with your doctor because the first four to six weeks some side effects can be more annoying than others. Some of the mores common side effects of taking Paxil CR include, but are not limited to: constipation, decreased appetite, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, nausea, sleeplessness, sweating, tremors, and vertigo.
Paxil CR, other medications and conditions
Treating your major depression with Paxil CR is appropriate if you are not taking drugs that are classified as MAO inhibitors. There have been reports of fatal reactions when these two types of medication are combined within two weeks of starting or stopping the inhibitor. Also, if you break out or have an allergic reaction to Paxil CR, consult your doctor immediately.
If you are taking Paxil CR to manage your major depression and you discover your symptoms getting worse or you are suddenly having suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor straight away. Some antidepressants have been associated with this phenomenon. Also, stay away from this medication if you have glaucoma, seizures, manic disorders, metabolism or blood disorders.
