Living Alone Tips

- Healthy Eating and Cooking Tips for Living Alone When you live alone, sometimes it may be easier to order in pizza or pick up fast food on your way home from work. Avoid the temptation of doing that and follow these tips for great and healthy meals.
- Casseroles and Crockpots Stock up on vegetables with long lives such as potatoes, carrots, and onions which can be used for casseroles or soups. Crockpots are great—throw a bunch of vegetables in the pot in the morning before leaving for work and leave it set on low all day. When you come home you have a great, healthy meal waiting for you!
- Double Time Instead of cooking one portion at a time, make double or even triple the serving size so that you can have extra for lunch or dinner the next day. Just remember to store the extra food right away to store food safely and avoid overeating.
- Read Cook Books There are so many cook books out there, there is bound to be one with food that you like in it. Go searching around for one and experiment one rainy day when you have nothing else to do. Who knows, you just might have fun. Oh, and of course, maybe what you make will actually be edible!
- Love Your Freezer So many different kinds of foods can be frozen instead of letting it go to waste. If you prepare too much of one meal and have no room in the fridge or plan on going away for a few days, pack it up in a sealed container and throw it in the freezer. Bananas, strawberries, broccoli, and carrots can be frozen and later used for smoothies or soups. All you have to do is wash, peel, and chop if needed and then store in an air tight freezer bag for later use.
- Meal Delivery If you really don’t have the time or patience to prepare your own meals, try looking into a meal delivery service such as Chefs Diet
. Your meals can be delivered to your door, with all the hard work done for you. Most of these companies find out what you like and what you dislike and prepare a special menu just for you.
- Grocery Shopping When shopping for groceries, it is important to remember a few things. First, make a shopping list and stick to it, or else you will end up with a whole bunch of junk food and items that you just don’t need. Second, don’t buy fresh items in bulk because they will spoil quickly and you will be wasting your money. Remember to try and shop off hours if possible to avoid congestion and long lines. And lastly, never shop when you are hungry!
- Healthy Potatoes Baked potatoes are easy to make in the microwave, and topped with some great stuff you can make a healthy meal out of it. Once in a while potatoes are great, just don’t eat them everyday. Cut your potato down the middle and cook in the microwave for approximately six minutes. Then, top with nonfat yogurt, barbecue sauce, low-fat cottage cheese and chives, sautéed onions and vegetables or chili.
- Stir Fry Stir fry fresh chopped veggies and serve with rice and beans for a healthy and tasty meal.
- Dine in With Friends We know that cooking and eating alone is not always fun, so try getting together with your friends to make dinner more fun. Invite a friend or two over to try cooking together. This will give you a chance to experiment in the kitchen, as well as have some fun! And who knows, maybe your friends can teach you a thing or two about cooking.
- Transform Leftovers If you have left over food, which you most likely will, use them to create a whole new exciting dish. Tuna, steak, salmon, chicken, or shrimp can be chopped up and used in stews, soups, or salads. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, try quesadillas, pastas, or sandwiches!
- Limit Snack Food Options Of course it is easier to eat a whole bag of popcorn or chips for dinner instead of eating real food—come on, we’ve all done it! You can avoid that by not buying unhealthy snacks at the grocery store. Instead, buy fruits, veggies, or nuts to snack on.
- Frozen vs. Canned Veggies Believe it or not, frozen vegetables still have a lot of nutrients that are great for you—and a lot better then the canned stuff. Season your veggies with herbs or spices and microwave them for a tasty and easy side dish.
- Foil It Tin foil serves as a great and easy pouch to cook meats or fish in, and makes clean up a breeze! Just spray the foil before putting your food in, and slather with spices, barbeque sauce, salsa, or pesto. Then, throw in the toaster oven, and enjoy.
- Eggs-Not Just for Breakfast Anymore While eggs can be high in cholesterol, why not try Egg Beaters or Second Nature cartons. All you have to do is pour into a pan, cook, and voila—you have eggs. Add ham, bacon bits, low fat cheese, chopped tomatoes, and green onions for a great meal!
- Frozen Dinners While we don’t advise eating a prepared frozen meal every day, they are okay once in a while. Just make sure to check the label and read the calories, fat, etc. One way to spice up these frozen dinners is to add your own spices, herbs, or vegetables. Frozen pizza will taste great with some fresh peppers or mushrooms on top and add that extra oomph it needs!
