Herpes and Its Signs - If You Suffer From These Signs and Symptoms You May Have Herpes!

Herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection, it is believed to affect approximately 80 million people in America alone. Every year another 500,000 Americans are diagnosed as having genital herpes and there are no signs of the yearly diagnosis slowing down. In this article we take a closer look at herpes and its signs.

The herpes infection is primarily spread by sexual contact which includes sexual intercourse and oral sex. It is caused by two similar viruses. These are Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1 for short), and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (also known as HSV-2). These two types of infection affect different parts of the body. HSV-1 causes oral herpes, whilst the closely related infection HSV-2 causes genital herpes. Herpes is highly contagious, but it is most likely to be transmitted if the sufferer has open sores.

If you have herpes the following symptoms are ones that you are most likely to experience:

Itching, painful bumps or blisters appearing in on the genitals, flu like symptoms, a burning sensation when urinating (as a result of urine flowing over the sores, difficulty urinating (this occurs in cases where blisters block the urethra), and open sores on the genitals.

If an individual is having a herpes attack for the first time the symptoms can be even more severe, these include:

Swollen lymph glands in the throat, headaches, chills, and fatigue. As you can see these symptoms are very similar to ones that are experienced by people who have flu. The average lifespan of a flare up of blister is approximately 2 weeks. If an individual who is infected with herpes has a disease that affects the immune system (leukemia for example), then the symptoms of herpes can last for even longer.

The first signs of herpes usually begin with a tingly itching sensation in the affected area, it may also be accompanied by flu like symptoms if it’s the primary infection. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned in this article and you think you are about to have a herpes out break, you should refrain from touching the infected area until the body has completed healed itself.

Not everyone catches genital herpes through sexual intercourse, some actually catch it from cold sores, remember the two viruses that cause herpes are closely related. Most people who develop genital herpes will experience a recurrence of the painful symptoms once in a while.

At the moment there is no cure for herpes, however there are some medications that help to treat the symptoms of herpes by making them last for a shorter period of time. For best results treatment should be used as soon as the signs of herpes become apparent.

Herpes and its signs can sometimes be misdiagnosed as another condition, such as yeast infection or boils in the vaginal area so reading up on herpes and getting some basic knowledge can be helpful. If you are ever unsure about a herpes diagnosis the best thing to do is seek a second opinion or ask for a blood test, the latter is a very reliable way of diagnosing this condition.
