Since I have this genetic problem from my father I could not do much about it. I also noticed that I lost more hair when I started weight lifting again when I was thirty. Doctors say that the increased level of testosterone could be the reason. The hormone gets converted into DHT which causes the hair loss in men.
But hormones or genetics are not always the only answer. Sometimes hair loss, although it might be a problem within the family, has other reasons. There are many different causes of hair loss.
A friend of mine just recently started to loose a lot of hair. The doctor did find out that his thyroid was not working properly. It was too low. My friend also mentioned he would feel cold more than usual. He also gained some weight. All signs of a thyroid problem which can lead to serious hair loss as well.
The thyroid is not the only thing that can cause hair loss. Malnutrition and stress are very common causes. Hair is made of keratin protein and you also need certain vitamins and minerals.
Today there are some treatments that help to slower hair loss like Propecia or Rogaine. There are also a lot of alternative treatments, many with questionable success though. If hair loss is genetic then there is not really much that helps.
The best tip is to go to the doctor first to find out the real causes. The earlier a treatment starts the bigger the chances to maintain the remaining hair. Once the hair is lost, it is difficult to gain it back.
