Omega 3 acid is the name given to a fat which is primarily obtained from fish and some vegetable oils. This fatty acid is considered as a good fat and our body requires it for various functions like prevention of internal blood clotting and maintenance of cell fluidity and stability.
DHA is a well known omega 3 acid. It is a short-chain fatty acid and can be obtained regularly by eating fish or consuming fish oil capsules. DHA is required for proper development of the brain and the eyes, and it also prevents conditions related to mental health like depression and anxiety.
Another omega 3 acid is known by the name of EPA. EPA is required for reducing inflammation throughout the body and is excellent for skin problems. DHA and EPA together prevent cardiovascular disease, colon cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. They are good for people who want to lose weight, those with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and children who suffer from hyperactivity and depression.
Yet another omega 3 acid that comes under this category is ALA. This fat is primarily obtained from flax seeds. Flax seeds are good for people who have digestive problems or those who are allergic to fish oil. Flax seed oil can also be used for cooking.
However, you should remember that vegetable oils can lower blood pressure significantly if taken in large amounts at once. So, be careful in consuming flax seed oil or other vegetable oils like olive oil, corn oil and hemp oil.
Fish oil capsules have been manufactured to cater the needs of thousands of people all over the world who cannot eat fish regularly. These capsules provide adequate amounts of DHA and EPA and are effective for almost anyone.
DHA and EPA are required by people of all ages. Infants need them to grow a healthy immune system, growing children require DHA to prevent hyperactivity, teenagers need these fats for the cure of teenage depression, and middle-aged people need these fats for the prevention and cure of arthritis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, coronary heart disease, colon cancer, gallstones and many other illnesses.
Similarly, pregnant women are in need of these fatty acids to ensure healthy pregnancies and to prevent birth defects and miscarriages. Later on during lactation they need to increase their intake of omega 3 fats to transfer good amounts of these essential fatty acids to their babies.
